Woody Overton and Jim Chapman are bringing you the latest information on the current news regarding nearly all of Louisiana's Death Row inmates (56 in total) being granted clemency hearings by the Louisiana Board of Pardons and Parole.
The board has agreed to hear the request of the 56 inmates through pressure from Louisiana governor John Bel Edwards whom has been an active voice against the use of the death penalty in Louisiana.
John Bel Edwards, who leaves office January 8th 2024 issued a pressure filled letter to the pardon board recently after they declined to allow the clemency hearings in response to an opinion the board sought from current Attorney General for the State of Louisiana Jeff Landry.
Landry, who is currently the leading candidate for Governor of the State of Louisiana cited a Louisiana statute which requires a request for clemency hearing within 1 year of an inmates final appeal, none of the 56 death row inmates that requested a hearing did so within that time frame which prompted the current Governor to pressure the board to waive the required time frame.
In his letter to the board, John Bel Edwards said the terminology was not clear and that 2 words in particular needed to be considered in the ruling.
The board has now decided to move on with allowing the hearings which are slated to start October 13th 2023.
Woody Overton and Jim Chapman break down this entire debate with the start of this series titled "The Louisiana Clemency Debacle".
