Bloody Angola helped me realize I’m most comfortable with a basic talking podcast format, i.e. minimal production value, not too many sound effects and ad breaks, a banger theme song…I just cannot stand the whole bit of podcasts trying to come off as more suffocatingly self-important than they actually are, with extremely high production value and sound effects overcompensating for lack of novel info, which greatly annoys me—that’s why Jim and Woody’s basic dialogue format is great. It’s two dudes sitting down and dropping straight knowledge for about 40 mins a week. And it’s endlessly fascinating stuff—harrowing tales of humanity in crisis (and utter lack thereof) from one of the most storied correctional facilities in American history. Also a handy primer on wider South Louisiana history! It’s this angle I’d love to see Jim and Woody working a bit more, particularly the link between Angola-related cases/events and the state’s history as well. Look forward to learning more about that specifically as the show continues, and THANK YOU to Jim and Woody for their attentive work on one of the best listens of my week. Loving it, guys. Salut!
